Useful Tip

Are you a jogger?  If so; you may not have given this much thought but running up from behind on a dog can be dangerous.  Running shoes today are quiet and often people do not even hear you approaching from behind.  You might want to consider making some noise when you approach someone out walking their dog.  Some dogs and even people are easily startled and their reaction can be unpredictable; so try to make some noise to let them know someone is approaching them from behind.

Useful Tip

I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me where someone else is walking their dog and wants to have a socializing encounter.  I have been told over and over again, "my dog is friendly, they love other people and dogs."  Then the next thing I know, this person's dog has lunged at my dog; biting, barking, and growling.  Of course, the person is immediately apologetic saying, "they have never done that before."  I think just like people, dogs can be intimidated by a larger dog.  This became such a frequent occurrence while I was out with my dogs; I stopped having encounters.  Whenever you decide to have a socializing encounter with dogs; try to have it with someone you know as well as their dog.  Bad encounters can do permanent damage; encounters should be pleasant experiences for everyone.

Useful Tip

Whenever you encounter a puppy or dog; always ask the owner if you can approach them.  A puppy or dog may look friendly; but that is not always the case.  It is always best to check with the owner before approaching a dog or puppy.

Useful Tip

Urinary infections can plague any breed or sex of dogs. If your dog frequently has urinary infections then you might consider giving them cranberry pills as a daily maintenance for a healthy urinary tract.  One of my females was plagued with urinary infections, seemed like it would be about two or three months between bouts.  I always took her to the vet for treatment; and kept her on antibiotics for ten days as recommended by the vet.  I also had her re-checked at the end of the antibiotics to make sure the urinary infection was gone.  I asked the vet if there was something I could use to maintain a healthier urinary tract for her; her recommendation was a very expensive prescription dog food.  Well I really did not want to go down that path; so I asked,  "what about giving her cranberry pills?"  She seemed skeptical but said go ahead and try it.  Well it has been very beneficial with her and seems to keep her tract healthy.
